Blind dates

Blind dates, arranged every week

A real blind date needs someone to arrange it. That is the part the apps never do.

The reason blind dates have a good reputation is not the mystery. It is that somebody who knew both of you thought you should meet.

That is the part almost nothing online does. An app can hide a photo. It cannot do the bit that mattered, which is somebody deciding you two in particular should sit down together.

What people usually find

  • Apps that hide the photo and nothing else. You still pick from a list, so you are doing the choosing blind rather than being chosen for.
  • Speed dating and singles events. Genuinely blind, but you have to be in the right city on the right night, and you meet whoever turned up.
  • Friends setting you up. The real thing, and the reason it works. It also depends on your friends knowing enough single people, which is why it happens twice a decade.
The good part of a blind date is not that you cannot see. It is that somebody chose.

Sunday is the third one, every week

Sunday is a matchmaker, not a dating app.

You answer a long set of questions once. Every week the matching looks at everyone who said they are free that Sunday and works out who genuinely suits you: age, intentions, children, faith, pace, how you argue, what you want your life to look like. Then it picks one person and introduces you both.

You do not browse and you do not choose. That is not a limitation, it is the product. Choosing from a list is the thing that made online dating exhausting.

How the evening goes

  1. 1

Sunday morning, one question. In or out tonight? Say nothing and you sit the week out.

  2. 2

Early evening, a link. If you were matched, it arrives by email and text with a first name and an age. Nothing else.

  3. 3

8pm, ten minutes. Video, in your browser. The first five minutes are audio only, then the cameras come on, so the first thing you learn about them is how they think.

  4. 4

Afterwards, one question each. Keep talking? Only a mutual yes is shared, and only then do you swap numbers.

Being honest about it

A blind date every week only works if there are enough people to choose from. We are still growing, so a yes does not always find a match, and some weeks you will be told there was nobody right for you rather than being handed somebody who was not.

That is deliberate. A bad match is worse than a quiet Sunday.

Common questions

Is there a blind date app?

There are apps that hide photos, but you still choose from a list yourself. Sunday is a matchmaker instead: it picks one person for you each week and introduces you both, which is what makes a blind date a blind date.

What do you know about them before the date?

A first name and an age. Nothing else, and no picture.

How long does a Sunday blind date last?

Ten minutes, every Sunday at 8pm Mountain time. Ten minutes is long enough to know whether you want longer, and short enough that a bad one costs you nothing.

What happens if we like each other?

You each privately answer one question afterwards. If you both say you want to keep talking, Sunday sends you each other's numbers. If only one of you says yes, neither of you is told who said what.

Your next blind date is Sunday.

Answer the questions once and we will do the arranging.
